Mexican Tourist Auto Insurance
Do I need Mexico insurance?
Yes, when you are driving in Mexico, you are legally required to have Mexico liability insurance coverage, and it must be provided from a Mexico company.
Does my U.S./Canadian auto insurance policy cover me in Mexico?
When driving in Mexico, you are required to have a Mexico liability insurance policy from a Mexico insurance company. Check with your agent, but in most cases, U.S. and Canadian full coverage auto policies do not cover your vehicle in Mexico. Mexpro offers liability only policies, but we recommend getting a full coverage policy, that will provide the required liability coverage and physical damage and theft coverage.
If you have an RV, there is a way to purchase coverage for physical damage on a U.S. policy with a separate policy that will save you money. Contact your U.S. or Canadian insurer to see if they offer this endorsement.
Do you have to buy Mexico insurance in Mexico?
No. In fact it's better to purchase coverage before you get there, otherwise you will not be insured until you get your policy in Mexico. In addition, your policy may not be written in English; and you may not have access to bilingual claims adjusters.
What's the difference between 'Liability' and 'Full Coverage' insurance?
Liability car insurance covers damages to another person or other property resulting from an accident you cause. Liability only policies provide the most basic auto insurance coverage, and the minimum required when driving in Mexico. Our liability only policies cover liability, medical payments, travel and legal assistance. There is no physcial damage coverage on your vehicle with this policy.
Full coverage car insurance includes liability coverage, plus physical damage to, and theft of your vehicle. In addition, our premium full coverage policies provide partial theft and vandalism coverage, higher liability limits, lower deductibles, gap coverage, uninsured motorist deductible waiver, U.S. labor rates or increased labor rates, and includes MexVisit® medical, travel, roadside, auto liability legal & personal legal assistance.
Can I get a full coverage Mexico Tourist Auto policy if I only have liability on my U.S. or Canada policy?
If you only have liability coverage on your current policy, then you cannot purchase a full coverage Mexico insurance policy. The exception is if the vehicle will be in Mexico for more than 180 days, in which case, you are eligible for full coverage while in Mexico.
What are Medical Payments?
Medical payments cover the driver and passengers. Limits vary depending on the policy and insurance company you choose. We provide medical payments on both our full coverage and liability only policies.
Do I get medical payments coverage when driving my motorcycle in Mexico?
No, motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs are excluded from this coverage.
Do I have Partial Theft & Vandalism coverage?
Our full coverage policies, come with multiple extended coverages including physical damage and total theft. Our premium full coverage policies include coverage for partial theft and vandalism, as well as gap coverage, uninsured motorist deductible waiver, higher liability limits, lower deductibles, U.S. labor or increased labor rates, and includes MexVisit® medical, travel, roadside, auto liability & personal legal assistance.
What is Gap Insurance?
Gap insurance offers an additional 15% on top of the current market value of your vehicle at the time of loss. This can help you to pay off any balance owed to your finance company (i.e. for a car loan, lease, etc.) in the event of a total loss. The actual cash value is generally determined by the Kelly Blue Book or NADA Guide value. Gap coverage is only available on Mexpro's premium full coverage policies.
What does 'Actual Cash Value/ACV' or 'Current Market Value' mean?
Actual Cash Value, also known as 'ACV' or 'current market value', is the value the insurance company will give for your vehicle in the event of a total loss. It applies only to full coverage policies. Do not guess your vehicle value when filling out Mexpro's auto insurance quote form. Your vehicle will only be covered up to the vehicle value listed in Kelly Blue Book (KBB) or NADA guide. You can choose a vehicle value of $0 (liability only) if you do not want full coverage insurance.
What does 'Liability Limit' and 'CSL' mean?
Combined single limit, also known as 'CSL' or 'liability limit' is the most that can be paid out for any combination of bodily injury and property damage liability claims. Mexpro recommends purchasing a combined single limit of $300,000 or more, due to Mexico's current liability laws. Our full coverage premium policies automatically come with $500,000 CSL.

How do I purchase a policy?
To purchase a policy online, fill out the initial quote application. Choose the coverage, price and insurance company that fits your needs and click on the 'Buy Now' button. You will be taken to the remainder of our application. You will need to provide:
- Vehicle ID number (VIN)
- License plate number
- U.S. or Canadian insurance information.
- Lien holder information, if applicable

What if I forgot to add a driver on my Mexico car insurance policy?
Anyone is covered as a driver of your insured vehicle, as long as they have a valid, non-Mexican driver's license, are over the age of 21 (unless you have paid for this surcharge) and have the registered owners permission to operate. On our quote application, you can list up to three people as additional drivers for peace of mind. However, if someone drives who is not listed, they are still covered under this policy as long as they meet the above conditions.
Can I purchase insurance coverage if plan to drive my car beyond Mexico, into Central or South America?
No. Unfortunately, Mexpro is only able to provide tourist auto insurance coverage in the country of Mexico.
How do I list my towed items on my policy?
If you only want liability coverage on your towed units while being towed, you do not need to list them on your policy, as it is automatically included, but ONLY while being towed and attached to the insured vehicle.
If your towed units are listed with their corresponding values on your quote application, then they will also be covered for physical damage, but only while being towed and attached to the towing unit.
Self-propelled towed vehicle(s)
If you want your auto, motorcycle, ATV and/or UTV insured once detached from the towing vehicle, you will need to purchase a separate policy for each vehicle. You should not list the towed units on the towing vehicle's policy because the separate policy covers them while in tow.
Towed Travel Trailers, Fifth Wheels, Toy Haulers, Boats, Boat/Vehicle/Utility Trailers, Pop Up Campers
For full coverage while in tow, you will need to list your towed unit(s), with a corresponding value on your quote application. Based on vehicle age and value, some units will not qualify for full coverage.
El Aguila is Mexpro's only insurer who provides physical damage coverage insurance on a non-self-propelled tow unit while detached.
What if I have an accident or get pulled over in Mexico?
After purchasing a policy, you will get an email with the policy, declaration page(s), claims information, terms and conditions and a username and password to get back into your account. Be sure you have a copy of these documents with you in the event you get pulled over for a traffic violation, or have an accident in Mexico.
How do I file a claim?
If you have an accident in Mexico, immediately call the 01-800 number listed on the insurance claims instructions page, which is part of your policy. Our adjusters will respond immediately and provide further instructions based on your specific situation. You can also find a quick claims checklist and claim contacts on our website.
How do I make changes to my policy?

How do I cancel my policy and get a refund?
Cancellations can be done by using our online cancellation form. Refunds will be credited back to the credit card used for the purchase. Depending on your bank, you should see your refund shortly after the cancellation is processed.
Policies canceled before the date the insurance coverage begins, will receive a full refund minus the policy fee. After the policy has started, daily policies and policy fees are not refundable. Six-month and annual policies are discounted; any refunds will be prorated. Six-month policies over 20 days and annual policies over 30 days are not refundable. What is MexVisit®?
MexVisit® is one of the best travel assistance products found in the Mexico insurance market. MexVisit® benefits include: travel, medical, roadside, auto liability legal, and personal legal assistance. MexVisit® is included in all our policies.
If I am in Mexico for more than 180 days, do I need to have insurance in my home state/province?
If you are traveling in Mexico for more than 180 days and choose to drop your U.S. or Canadian policy in lieu of Mexico coverage, the state/province where your vehicle is registered may cancel your registration due to lack of insurance. You must have a valid registration for Mexpro coverage to apply while in Mexico. For this reason, you should be aware of your state insurance requirements.
Can I get insurance on a leased vehicle?
Yes. However, you will need a permission letter from the lessor to drive the car into Mexico. And they may require you to get a full coverage policy. Be sure to list the lessor name and information on the policy application.
Can you insure my rental car?
We can only insure rental cars rented in the U.S. with U.S. license plates. Additionally, you will need permission from your rental company to take the vehicle to Mexico. We can NOT insure rental cars with a Mexico License plate.
Do you sell Temporary Vehicle Importation Permits (TIP)?
No, you can only get a Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit (TIP) through Mexico's Banjercito government agency. Mexpro has no affiliation, authority or connections with this organization. See our TIP FAQ with common questions for more information.

Can my wife, friend, guide or someone else with a Mexican license drive my car?
No. Your Mexico auto insurance will not cover anyone as a driver who has a Mexican driver's license, with or without your permission.
What if the person driving my car does not have a driver's license?
A person driving a vehicle without a valid driver's license is not covered under Mexpro's insurance policies.
If you forget to take your driver's license with you to Mexico, you are still covered. However, it may make things more difficult with authorities if you are pulled over or involved in an accident.
What is a driver's license policy?
A driver's license policy covers multiple foreign plated vehicles under the same policy. The policy only offers liability coverage. Unlike our typical Liability Only policies, however, no medical payments coverage is included.
Why are the dates on my Mexican Car Insurance policy are wrong?
There are two reasons we receive this question regarding incorrect dates on a Mexican car insurance policy. The first has to do with the date format. Unlike the U.S., Mexico, and much of the rest of the world, use a Day/Month/Year format. Because Mexican claims adjustors will be determining what is covered in the event of an accident, we chose to use the method used in Mexico. If you purchased a policy that begins on June 1, your policy would show as beginning on 1/6/20XX.
The second reason the dates may be different than what you expect is that all our policies begin at 12:01 AM on the effective date of the policy. The exception is when the policy is purchased on the same day that you plan to enter Mexico, in which case it starts at time of issuance. And, your policy will end at 12:01 AM on the date following the expiration date. You have one minute of coverage on the next day of the policy to ensure you have a full day of coverage. As an example, if you need coverage from June 1st to June 6th, your policy begins on June 1 at 12:01 AM and ends at 12:01 AM on June 7th. So, the dates on the policy would be as follows: 1/6/20XX - 1/7/20XX.

Boat & Personal Watercraft
Do I need Insurance on my boat while in Mexico?
Yes. Any boat or watercraft operating in Mexican waters or entering Mexico ports is legally required to carry Mexico Watercraft Liability insurance. Liability coverage provides financial responsibility in the event an owned watercraft is responsible for damages done to other vessels, docks, marinas or persons.
What types of boats and personal watercraft do you insure?
We cover personal watercraft (jet skis, etc.), yachts, sailboats and powerboats up to 133 feet in length.
Do you provide Mexico insurance for commercial boats?
No. We are unable to provide any insurance coverage for boats that are participating in commercial activities.
Can I buy my policy on a short-term basis?
Yes. We offer daily policies, and discounted 6-month or annual policies; all options are provided on our quote results page. If you see the daily option has a large 'X' instead of a price, it means the price is higher than the discounted 6-month or annual rates.
What boat liability limits do you offer?
Bodily injury (to others) limits are $50,000, $100,000 or $250,000 per person. Bodily injury (to others) per accident limits are $100,000, $300,000, or $500,000. Property damage liability (to others) is offered at $100,000 or $250,000.
Our boat liability policy covers damages done to third parties, including other vessels, docks, marinas, etc. We do not provide coverage for damages done to your owned watercraft, nor medical payments for you or your passengers. We strictly provide Mexico Liability coverage for damages to third parties for which you are legally liable.

Mexico Homeowners
Should I get Insurance on my home in Mexico?
Yes, a home in Mexico is a financial investment that needs to be protected against the risks of fire, natural disasters and theft. Securing the proper amount of liability coverage is also particularly important in Mexico (we recommend no less than $300,000 in liability coverage).
Should I get Insurance for the interior of my condo in Mexico?
Yes, if you own the interior elements of your condo in Mexico, you need to protect your financial investment. Condo owners need coverage for interior improvements, including: countertops, cabinetry, fixtures, interior walls, electrical, etc. Liability coverage is not only important in case someone gets hurt while visiting your condo, but also in case your condo causes damage to a neighbor's condo (for example: water damage from a leaky pipe).
How do I know I am buying from a reputable Mexico home insurance company?

What if we have a home, townhome, or condo that has multiple owners?
Your policy requires that the "Named Insured" field reads exactly as the title to your home. Verify it matches what appears on your Fideicomiso, or deed. The names of multiple insureds, trust names, business names, etc., may be split and entered into the First Name and Last Name fields of the quote form.
What if I'm having trouble finding the postal code for my home?
Your property's title, deed, or trust (Fideicomiso) paperwork should have your postal code. You may also find it listed on a utility bill. Google maps can also be helpful in locating a Mexican postal code.
You can also use http://codigo-postal.co/mexico/ to find your postal code. Click on the link and complete the steps below:
- Select the Mexican state
- Select the nearest city or town (municipio)
- Locate the nearest neighborhood (asentamiento), then click on the corresponding postal code number
- A list of all asentamientos in the postal code will show up at the top of the page
- Scroll down to see the Google map with the zona postal (postal code zone) area outlined in red. You may have to click on the blue cargar mapa (load map) button inside the map first, and answer a security question before the red area will be shown on the map.

What is refunded on a policy if I choose to cancel?
Prior to policy being in use, and if purchasing a new policy, you will receive a full refund, minus the policy fee.
If the policy is in effect, cancellations are prorated per the terms and conditions of the policy. No fee is refunded.

Yes, a home in Mexico is a financial investment that needs to be protected against the risks of fire, natural disasters and theft. Securing the proper amount of liability coverage is also particularly important in Mexico (we recommend no less than $300,000 in liability coverage).

Yes, if you own the interior elements of your condo in Mexico, you need to protect your financial investment.
